New Caledonia mixing experience and youth for their Melanesia Cup campaign

NEW CALEDONIA – New Caledonia has officially announced their FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup 2017 roster. They will be taking on Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Solomon Islands for one of three 2019 Pacific Games qualifying spots and the first ever Melanesia Cup.

The New Caledonia women will be lead by coaches Noah Tetuanui and Natsumi Wainebengo.

"It's a transitional team," said coach Tetuanui. "There are older players who will support the youth, some of our girls have played in the last FIBA Oceania U17 event."

"The idea is to build a team for 2019 [Pacific Games] with a mixture of these generations."

Among the mixture of experience and youth sits 1.8m tall Clementine Puleoto who last represented New Caledonia during the FIBA Women's U17 Oceania Championship 2017 in Guam.

New Caledonia will be looking to make their way back to the Pacific Games. After finishing outside of the finals in 2015, this team will be out to make their country proud and raise that cup above their heads.

New Caledonia’s first game will see them match up against the Solomon Islands in the first game of the event.
