New Caledonia Women have qualified for the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa

PAPUA NEW GUINEA (FIBA Women's Melanesia Basketball Cup 2017) - They've done it, after a 49-60 thriller against Solomon Islands, the New Caledonia women have qualified for the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.

After a Game 1 loss to the Solomon Islands, there were some nerves going into this 3rd place matchup. It was win or bust for this New Caledonia side. With a mixture of experience and youth, there were some bumps along the road but building for the future has paid off as the young athletes in this team will be well prepared for Samoa.

New Caledonia already knows that they will see fellow Melanesia teams Fiji and Papua New Guinea in 2019 but now it's a waiting game to see who qualifies from the Polynesian and Micronesia regions.

FIBA.basketball was able to speak with Yolande Luepak from New Caledonia and get her thoughts on the game.

"We are satisfied with the win," said Luepak. "It has been very hot here and the conditions are difficult but we have fought hard and kept positive, we kept the fighting spirit."

New Caledonia will now wait to find out if Fiji or Papua New Guinea will hold the first-ever FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup.
