InterClube brush aside First Bank to top Group A

LUANDA (FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017) - Reigning African champions InterClube made light work of First Bank 92-79 to top Group A on Wednesday at the ongoing FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017 at Kilamba Arena in the Angolan capital.

Point guard Italee Lucas was at the heart of her side's victory with 20 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals to ensure they moved to eight points and remained unbeaten on course to defending their title in their bid to chase a record sixth trophy.

In-form forward Ndidi Madu recorded a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Jorge Felizarda da Conceicao added 17 points to guide Apolinario Paquete's side to an important victory that will go a long way in giving them confidence at the tournament. 

In an interview with FIBA.basketball, Lucas said, "It was really important for us to win this game to keep the momentum. We won because we picked up on our defense and we also did well offensively." 

First Bank's point guard Dominique Wilson sunk a game high 22 points while shooting guard Nkechi Akashili scored 21 points as captain Chioma Udeaja added 13 points and 13 rebounds but InterClube were better on the day. 

Meanwhile, Primeiro de Agosto overcame an early scare to defeat DC Motema Pembe of DR Congo to remain unbeaten in Group B. 

Forward Leia Dongue dropped an impressive 23 points and picked eight rebounds in a game that called for her physical astuteness in the paint as well as her experience. 

Ferroviario de Maputo from Mozambique defeated Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 68-34 to finish second in Group B while GS Petroliers edged AS Vita from Democratic Republic of Congo 66-61 to finish third in Group A and eliminate the latter from the tournament.
