Canada announce squad for first women's training camp

TORONTO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Canada have included all 12 members of the team that won last year's FIBA Americas Women's Championship in their 24-member provisional squad for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Led by coach Lisa Thomaidis, the Canadians rolled to an unbeaten record in Edmonton. They clinched the title, and a spot in the Olympics for the second consecutive time, with a victory over Cuba.

Seven of those players in the title-winning team of 2015 were in the squad at the London Games, when Canada finished eighth.

Natalie Achonwa, Miranda Ayim, Kim Gaucher, Lizanne Murphy, Michelle Plouffe, Tamara Tatham and Shona Thorburn all played at the 2012 Olympics. The other members of last year's side that finished top of the podium on the 24-member list are Nirra Fields, Miah-Marie Langlois, Kia Nurse, Katherine Plouffe and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe.

Nurse, the leading scorer in last year's side at 13 points per game, last month celebrated her second straight NCAA Championship as a sophomore guard at the University of Connecticut.

Canada, meanwhile, continue to reward players from the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) that have had strong years. University of Saskatchewan guard Laura Dally is among the 24 players invited to attend the camp in Edmonton. The Bright's Grove, Ontario product is the only athlete on the invitation list to play in the CIS this season.

Dally was CIS All-Canadian and the Canada West's Outstanding Player of the Year after averaging 17.2ppg and 4.8rpg and leading the Huskies to their first-ever CIS Championship in March. She averaged nearly 20ppg, including a 25-point performance in the Championship, and was named a CIS Final 8 Tournament All-Star.

All 24 players have been invited to the Women's National Team Phase 1 camp at the Saville Community Centre in Edmonton, 21-30 May.

A smaller squad will then be selected to travel to Spain and France for a five-game exhibition tour. Friendly opponents will be Australia, Spain, France, China and Cuba.

Canada will gather again on 28 June in Edmonton for their second phase of training. They will host China in the Edmonton Grads International Classic (EGIC) from 9-11 July at the Saville Centre in Edmonton.

Canada's last phase of training will start 22 July in Toronto. The team will next travel to the United States for a friendly tournament before leaving for Rio de Janeiro and the Olympic Games.

Canada will play in Group B in Brazil against the USA, Senegal, Serbia and two teams that come out of the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Nantes (13-19 June).
