Nigeria beat Senegal to top Group B

YAOUNDE (AfroBasket Women 2015) - Nigeria on Monday made a serious statement of their aims at AfroBasket Women 2015, beating continental rivals Senegal 75-64.

With the win Scott Nnaji's team climbed top of Group B thanks to Angola's defeat early in the day.

Turning Point: Nigeria led all but 3:34 minutes of game, especially because of their instense defense as well as offense efficiency.

Stats Don't Lie: Nothing seemed to work out for Senegal as the team leading scorer Astou Traore only scored her first two points later in the third quarter to finish with six points.

Although Nigeria entered the final quarter leading 60-48, Senegal managed to cut the deficit to just six points. But a succession of poor execution resulting in three turnovers in that moment of the game allowed Nigeria to regain a 12-point lead.

Game Hero: Both Helen Ogunjimi and playmaker Sarah Ogoke came off the bench to reenergise Nigeria's offense. The pair combined for three Nigeria's three-pointers as Ogoke led all scorers with 18 points.

Bottom Line: It was Nigeria's first win over Senegal in the last three meetings at AfroBasket Women competition.
Nigeria improved their mark to 3-1, prompting Joyce Ekworomadu to describe the win as "big statement, but we need to face one game at time."
