First Bank through to FIBA Africa Women's Champions Cup 2017

LAGOS(FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017)- Nigeria side First Bank Basketball have secured ticket for the Final Round of this year's FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women (FIBA ACCW) which will take place from November 10-19 in Luanda, Angola.

The team’s qualification came as a result of being the only women’s team to register for the FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifiers.

News of the qualification reaching First Bank was that of a mixed feeling as they expressed happiness for qualifying without stepping on the court but were also sad that the team did not play competitively against other teams from the Zone, and this might have a negative effect on their performance in Angola.

First Bank's head coach, Peter Ahmedu told FIBA.basketball that he would have loved to try out his girls against teams from the zone.

“We were prepared for the zone 3 qualifiers but as things have turned out differently, we will work towards our original goal of playing in the Final Round in Angola.

“There is a need for us now to double our preparation because every team that will feature at the continent’s biggest women club championship will be gunning for the top prize,” Ahmedu said.

In order to make great impact at the Luanda showdown, Ahmedu recalled that they will make fresh additions to their squad as the Final Round is a very high level.

''We would strengthen our team to enable us compete favorably against other top teams of the continent''.

First Bank Basketball Club who are the reigning champions in the Nigeria domestic league claimed a Third-Place finished at the 2016 edition of the FIBA ACCW held in Maputo, Mozambique.
