The week's big numbers: Reynolds and Roberson go mano-a-mano; Ironi Nahariya gamble on Gamble

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) - Although the weekly number of games has declined steadily over the season in the FIBA Europe Cup, the remaining teams and players are doing their best to keep up the record-breaking pace of the competition.

Elan Chalon point guard John Roberson took it upon himself to shatter two long-standing FIBA Europe Cup milestones, while excellent performances by Cibona playmaker Scott Reynolds and Telekom Baskets big man Julian Gamble made this an even more special week.

Like at the end of every week, we take a closer look at what actually happened across European arenas through the lens of numbers.

There were no mis-steps for home sides in the first leg of the Quarter-Finals, with Muratbey Usak Sportif, Enisey Krasnoyarsk, Cibona Zagreb and Telekom Baskets Bonn taking care of business on their home floor.

The wins achieved by Usak (+3) and Cibona (+2) are largely just cosmetic and haven't answered any questions in the respective ties, while double-digit victories by Enisey (+12) and Telekom Baskets (+21) were big-time statements.

Home court advantage seems to be in full effect in the Play-Offs, as there were also only four instances of teams not winning in front of their own fans in the Round of 16 stage.

Frank Elegar became the stand-alone leader in double-doubles in the FIBA Europe Cup, after reaching double digits in points and rebounds in the same game for the seventh time this season.

Before the 15-point and 10-rebound game against Telenet Oostende in the first leg of the Quarter-Finals, the Enisey big man had shared the season-high in double-doubles with Davon Jefferson of Gaziantep, who has 6 double-doubles to his name.

However, Elegar will not need to worry about Jefferson closing the gap, as the Turkish side were eliminated by Ironi Nahariya in the Round of 16.

Elan Chalon point guard John Roberson is second among the still-active players with five double-doubles, all of them in points and assists.

John Roberson splashed home one long-range bomb after another in Zagreb, making a FIBA Europe Cup record 10 three-pointers in a row in the first three quarters against Cibona before finally missing his final attempt.

The Elan Chalon playmaker didn't attempt a single long-range shot in the fourth quarter of the game, with the Croatian team shifting even more of their defensive focus to limit the damage that was being done by Roberson on his career night.

With the previous FIBA Europe Cup best of eight three-point field goals made reached just two minutes into the second half, it became apparent quite early in the game that a new record was in the making.

The previous mark was co-owned by five players – Toni BizacaAndrew BarhamDevonte NewbillBrady Heslip and Thaddus McFadden.

In a thrilling match-up between two of FIBA Europe Cup's elite point guards at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Hall, Roberson wasn't the only one putting on a spectacle.

Scott Reynolds of Cibona also had a fantastic night, scoring 20 points, dishing out a spectacular 15 assists and adding 5 steals to his tally as well.

The 15 assists rank as the third-best dime-dishing performance this season, but what is more impressive is that it is an all-time FIBA Europe Cup Play-Off high as well, surpassing the 14-assist mark set by Pau-Lacq-Orthez point guard D.J. Cooper merely two weeks ago.

33

In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes… and Yorman Bartolo being a pest on defense. The 31-year-old Telekom Baskets guard wreaked havoc on Ironi Nahariya with disruptive play on the defensive end and did all the dirty work, finishing the game not only with 15 points in his account, but also a league-best plus/minus rating of +33 this week.

37

Although we saw huge performances by John Roberson and Scott Reynolds in the FIBA Europe Cup this week, it was Telekom Baskets big man Julian Gamble who beat both of the guards in terms of efficiency and registered the fourth-best individual performance in the competition, ranking-wise.

Having connected on 10-of-11 shots from the field and 5-of-7 from the free-throw stripe, Gamble collected a monstrous double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds, also chipping in with 2 assists and a steal for a total ranking of 37.

Meanwhile, Reynolds had a ranking of 36, while Roberson finished with a performance index of 35.

Telekom Baskets went on to claim a convincing 89-68 victory against Ironi Nahariya in a game decided already in the opening quarter, during which the Israeli side managed just 5 points.

39

You might have seen this name in this text a dozen times already, but John Roberson deserves at least one more mention for setting a new FIBA Europe Cup single game scoring record with a 39-point game against Cibona.

Roberson made 12-of his 17 shots from the field, including 10-of-11 from three-point range, and knocked down all 5 free-throw attempts, but Elan Chalon ultimately came up short 87-85 in Zagreb.

The previous record of 38 points by the SL Benfica big man Ivica Radic had been in place for more than 15 months after being registered against Sopron on November 25, 2015.
