Andorra and Wales claim Semi-Final tickets in Group B; Austria move to 3-0

SERRAVALLE (FIBA U16 European Championship 2018, Division C) – Andorra and Scotland became the first teams to secure Semi-Final berths in the FIBA U16 European Championship 2018, Division C, after continuing their unbeaten runs in San Marino on Saturday.

While two spots to the next round remain available in Group A, Andorra and Scotland already carved up the top of the Group B table among themselves, following impressive performances against Malta and Scotland, respectively.

Andorra eliminated Malta from theoretical contention with a 75-61 win, as Miguel Mart Chamorro led the way with an impressive 19-point and 17-rebound double-double. Sergi Serrato Balletbo shared the team-high 19-point mark for Andorra, while Matthew Scerri top-scored for Malta with 16 points and 10 boards.Andorra and Wales will play for the top spot in Group B on 

Earlier in the day, Wales also moved to a 3-0 record after downing Scotland 65-58 in the all-British showdown that featured a 25-7 run for the Welsh side in the fourth quarter to tip the scales their way, despite entering the final stanza down 51-40.

Panagiotis Karras had a game-high 23 points and 9 rebounds for Wales, while Luke Gordos double-doubled with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. For Scotland, Louis Sullivan collected a team-high 19 points.

Meanwhile, Austria eased past Albania 61-37 and also inscribed their third victory in a row in Group A, but, unlike Andorra and Wales, cannot be sure of a spot in the Semi-Finals just, given the specific situation in the standings.

Stefan Blazevic was the top scorer for the Bernd Wimmer-coached Austrians in the big victory with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Felix Angerbauer added 16 points.

Tournament hosts San Marino also kept their chances of advancing alive by getting to a 1-2 record before the last day of action in the Group Phase with a positive 60-47 result against Moldova behind a 28-point effort from Francesco Palmieri and a fantastic rebounding game by Matteo Dappozo, who finished the game with 8 points and 18 rebounds.
