SKOPJE (North Macedonia) - The FIBA U16 European Championship is one of 16 youth events that will take place across the summer of 2023.

The tournament will take place in Skopje, North Macedonia from August 5-13, 2023.

Who is participating?

A total of 16 teams will compete for the title with the top five teams besides Turkey also qualifying for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024, which will be held in Turkey. The 16 teams have been split into four groups of four.

The Group Phase is as follows:

Group A: Slovenia, Italy, Turkey, Montenegro
Group B: North Macedonia, Lithuania, France, Belgium
Group C: Germany, Israel, Spain, Finland
Group D: Latvia, Serbia, Greece, Poland

What is the schedule?

The Group Phase will take place across the first three days of the tournament with a rest day on August 8. The competition will continue in the form of the bracket beginning with the Round of 16 starting on August 9 until the Final on August 13, with the Classification games also determining each of the 16 positions.

Who were the winners in 2022?

Lithuania took home the title in last year's tournament with a 77-68 victory in the Final over Spain in Skopje. Mantas Laurencikas top scored with 26 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals and Kasparas Jakucionis collected 15 points and 11 rebounds as Lithuania ended a run of four straight Final losses in the competition to be crowned champions for the first time since 2008.

Mario Saint-Supery poured in 31 points with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in a losing effort for Spain.

Meanwhile, the promoted trio from Division B - Germany, Finland and Belgium - will take the place in this year's edition of the relegated trio of Croatia, Netherlands and Denmark.

Former MVPs

Spain's Mario Saint-Supery took home MVP honors in 2022 with averages of 21.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game to join the long list of names as tournament MVP.

Roll of honor

Lithuania claimed their second title in the competition's history last year, their seventh overall medal at the event. They also became the seventh country to win at least seven total medals.

The most successful side is Yugoslavia with eight Championships, while Spain are five-time champions and have a record 19 medals overall. Croatia have four titles and Turkey have 11 combined medals having finished in third place on seven occasions.
