EuroLeague Women: Week 2 social media spotlight and reaction

MUNICH (EuroLeague Women 2017) - We call up some of those involved in Week 2 of EuroLeague Women 2017 and check out what’s been going down on social media.

Sonja Petrovic was back to her magnificent best for ZVVZ USK Prague against Wisla Can-Pack as she amassed 25 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in an 84-63 victory. After a slow start, the Serbian star was happy that her team's proven chemistry acted as a major difference-maker.

"The first quarter was very tough and there was great basketball from both sides, since they pushed us and we showed our character and endurance," she stated, as she put on a great show for her mum who was sat courtside.

"I think we have an advantage because our team hasn’t really changed from last season, so we know each other very well and in this part of the season it might play an important role.

"We have had a great start to the season, so now we just need to continue with this [level of] performance," added Petrovic.

Sandrine Gruda made a sizeable splash on her EuroLeague Women debut for Fenerbahce as she garnered 23 points and 8 boards in a 69-63 win against Montpellier.

Home comforts for Perfumerias Avenida will end as they hit the road next week and that is why Romanian national team kingpin Gabriela Marginean stressed the importance of the Spanish side moving to 2-0 after a superb 92-62 triumph at Pabellon Wurzburg against Hatay BSB.

"Every EuroLeague Women game is very important, especially when you play at home, because winning away is really difficult," stressed the forward who chipped in with 15 points.

"I just tried to help my team-mates [against Hatay], I am always trying to do my best at defence, it is the right mentality, and I hope I did it today, and I have my chances offensively.

"The right mentality is to think we can be up there [challenging for honours], and we can get it if we really want it."

In contrast, Hatay will hope it's third time lucky in their ongoing quest for a maiden win, although they do have UMMC next up! At least Belarusian star Katsiaryna Snytsina had some straightforward advice.

Just keep going!

Dynamo Kursk are showing they not only have the talent - but they seem to have the team spirit as well under new head coach Lucas Mondelo and a real expert Spaniard on the floor in Anna Cruz.

And that feel-good factor is also having a good impact on young Russian talent Kseniia Levchenko who has largely been frozen out in recent years. Now she is learning from Cruz and backing her up - which also bodes well for the Russian national team. She may have only got five minutes, but four of her team-mates didn’t get on at all, so being part of an eight-player rotation in a tight 73-67 win against Mersin did matter.

She stated: "Despite not really playing in EuroLeague Women for the first year, I am always still excited and now with each game, I get more and more confident because the fans are always cheering me.

"Whenever I have an opportunity I show all my abilities to shoot, steal the ball and play good defence for the coach to keep me on the court playing!"

Finally, the tributes are quite rightly pouring in for Laia Palau of ZVVZ USK Prague, who made history as she became the first player in EuroLeague Women history to hand out 1,000 assists.

It is an astonishing achievement, with a few of those in recent years being dished to 2015 Final Four MPV, Kia Vaughn who remains very appreciative!
