Quimsa pushes in second half to secure Group B win

BUENOS AIRES (Argentina) – After a back and forth first half, a second half push from Quimsa led them to a 86-78 win over Club Nacional de Montevideo at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires on Friday night.

Quimsa managed just a four-point cushion after a back and forth first half, anchored by Emiliano Basabe's shot-clock buzzer beater with 4 seconds to play from beyond the three-point arc to extend the lead from 1 point to 4.

Nacional went just 3-of-11 from two-point range for 27% of their shots, but found success from the free throw line making 88 percent of their baskets.

Michael Smith led Nacional with 11 points by the half, but was the only double-digit scorer while Quimsa was led by Brandon Robinson and Tayavek Gallizzi with 8 points each.

Still only leading by 4 points, 41-37, Quimsa managed to build a 13-point halfway through the third quarter, with Juan Brussino adding 5 points in the quarter, but Nacional managed to cut the lead back to 9 going into the final frame.

Alejandro Acosta kept Nacional close by dominating on the boards, while also running plays on the offensive side despite Robinson, Basabe and Eduardo Vasirani adding the heat from Quimsa's side.

Nacional used their size to dominate in the paint, forcing 52 points from inside, but Quimsa capitalized on the turnovers made by Nacional to keep two steps ahead.

In the fourth quarter Quimsa once again saw a double digit lead, even until the final seconds until a foul on Nacional allowed two free throws to cut the lead to 8, but the all-around rotation of Quimsa, with six players adding 9 points or more by the buzzer, proved that they would hang on to the lead for good.

Robinson led Quimsa with 19 points shooting 50 percent from the floor while Vasirani added 12 points and Basabe added 11.

A monster 17-point, 14-rebound performance from Acosta was crucial for Nacional to stay on par with Quimsa, while Smith added 13 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.
