USA AmeriCup 2017 hero Hilliard pens deal with San Antonio Spurs

SAN ANTONIO (FIBA AmeriCup 2017) - Darrun Hilliard's solid performances for the United States at the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 have given him a shot to play in the NBA again.

The former Detroit Pistons guard has signed with the San Antonio Spurs.

Hilliard played a pivotal role for the USA as they came from behind to stun Argentina, 81-76, in the AmeriCup Final.

The Americans trailed by 20 points but hit back with Hilliard's 15 points leading the way.

Hilliard, a second-round draft pick by the Pistons in 2015, has joined the Spurs on a two-way contract, which is new to the NBA this season. Each team will now be able to have the standard 15 players on their roster, as well as up to two additional players on two-way contracts.

Two-way players will spend the bulk of the season in the NBA G League, which includes the Spurs’ affiliate in Austin, Texas.

Hilliard could end up featuring for the USA when they play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers, which tip off in November.

San Antonio Spurs boss Gregg Popovich will coach the USA team when they attempt to defend their title at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China. Only teams that compete in that event will have an opportunity to play at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
