Things to know about the do-or-die World Cup Qualifiers clash between Angola and Cameroon

LUANDA (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - Cameroon and Angola have offered fans some of the most electrifying clashes in African basketball in recent years, and Friday's encounter for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers is expected to be yet another thriller.

Separated by a single point in Group E, the winner of this contest will increase their chances of securing the group's second and last automatic berth for next year's World Cup in China while the loser might enter the race for the best third-place to complete the five-team African lineup for China.

So, before the highly anticipated game, here are a few things you need to know about the do-or-die clash between Angola and Cameroon.

Angola's home court record.

Angola won three of their eleven African Championships titles as hosts (1989, 1999 and 2007), and they did so without tasting a defeat on home soil, totalling an impressive 20-0 home record.

In addition to that mark, Angola established a new record last year after beating Egypt, DR Congo and Morocco to start their World Cup quest, establishing a 23-0 home record.

Head-to-head Cameroon vs Angola

Angola first beat Cameroon in the Final of the FIBA AfroBasket 2007 in Luanda. Four years later, Angola advanced to the African Championship Semi-Finals thanks to an 84-83 Quarter-Finals overtime win over Cameroon in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

And two months ago, in Tunisia, Cameroon looked set to beat for the first time, but somehow the Angolans prevailed 83-76 to improve their head-to-head to 3-0.

Lazare Adingono

Although he has previously coached his country, earlier this week, Adingono was confirmed as the third head coach of the "Indomitable Lions" in a year. He replaced Frenchman Jean Denys Choulet, who took over from Brazilian Carlos Barbosa.

However, it's his historic with Angolan basketball that could be a factor.

They say if you can't beat them, join them. And Adingono did just that.

After losing to Angola on two occasions (FIBA AfroBasket 2007 and 2011), Adingono signed for Angolan giants Petro de Luanda seven years ago and never left. He has even been tipped for the Angolan job.

And his knowledge of the Angolan basketball could play a major part in Friday's game.

World Cup history

While Angola hope to return to the World Cup for the fifth time in a row, the Cameroonians arrived in Luanda chasing their first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup appearance. looking for three victories against Angola, Morocco and Egypt.
