Nedovic ruled out but Serbia still have strong backcourt

BELGRADE (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Golden State Warriors guard Nemanja Nedovic held out as long as he could in a bid to play for Serbia at the FIBA Basketball World Cup but on Wednesday was ruled out through injury.

New x-rays revealed the 23-year-old still has a fractured fifth metatarsal of the right foot.

He will need to keep it immobilized and hope that it heals in plenty of time for him to start training camp with his NBA club.

Serbia will nevertheless have a strong backcourt at the World Cup in Spain, where they are to play in Group A against France, Brazil, Egypt, Iran and hosts Spain.

Milos Teodosic is back in the fold after missing EuroBasket 2013 through injury and two of last year's star guards, veteran Stefan Markovic and recent Fenerbahce Ulker signing Bogdan Bogdanovic, are ready to contribute.

Bogdanovic had 13 points and Markovic 12 in the Serbians' 79-64 triumph over Turkey last Saturday, which gave the home side the Belgrade Tournament Trophy.

The players had also featured in a convincing 85-67 victory over Argentina in their first game of the tournament.

Markovic, honored before the Argentina game which marked his 100th appearance for Serbia, was named the MVP of the Belgrade Trophy.

Serbia have been practicing in Vrsac ever since to prepare for the first of two friendlies against New Zealand.

They will play in the city on Thursday, and then return to Belgrade to face the Tall Blacks again on Sunday.

Teodosic has been recovering from an ankle injury and did not play in the Belgrade Trophy.

He was expected to be on the court in Vrsac against the Kiwis.
