A Quarter-Finals Preview

CHENZHOU (FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016) - Two teams have fallen by the wayside after the group stage, and now eight remain in contention for the coveted FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016 title. Four knockout games commence tomorrow to determine the four clubs that will advance to the Semi-Finals. Let's look at how each team has done, and what their chances are of staying alive.

Al Riyadi
Al Riyadi swept through Group A in convincing fashion, beating opponents by an average of around 16 points. Even Iranian powerhouse Petrochimi couldn’t upend the Lebanese, who will continue to rely on Dewarwick Spencer, Fadi El Khatib and Wael Arakji in the big games ahead.

Petrochimi
The Iranians won their first three games of the group stage and looked in good shape against Al Riyadi before a critical scoring drought in the fourth quarter of their match up spelled doom. Man for man, this Iranian squad remain one of the deepest in the competition, but if they make it to the Semi-Finals, it’s likely they’ll face hosts China.

Pauian
The Taipei club had their biggest win when they defeated Al Rayyan on Day 2. That pretty much sealed their place at third spot in Group A, and they actually have a solid shot of beating Al Ahli in the Quarter-Finals, provided, of course, Quincy Davis, Doug Creighton and Lin Chin-Pang all step up.

Al Rayyan
The Qataris are just not the same team without their iconic stars. Al Rayyan have been wanting in both depth and experience. Still, if Preston Knowles, Yehia Abdelhaleem and Hassan Mohamed all click, this team can be competitive and even dangerous in the Quarter-Finals.

China Kashgar
The hosts predictably swept Group B, and they made it look really easy. It seemed like they just cruised through the first round, and the real tournament is just beginning for them. The import pairing of Andray Blatche and Darius Adams look sharp, while so many locals have stepped up huge. They will be very tough to beat.

Al Ahli
The UAE squad have made the most of the chances given to them so far. They will be in a dogfight versus Pauian in the Quarter-Finals, but if guys like Samuel Young, Qais Al-Shabebi and Chiekh Samb all put up big numbers, Al Ahli may just advance to the Semi-Finals.

Al Shorta
The onus will remain with Justin Hawkins and DeAndre Rice to continue carrying this team. They will have their work cut out for them against Petrochimi, of course, but if Hawkins and Rice wax hot and a couple of the locals play their A-game, anything can happen.

Barsy Atyrau
Perhaps the toughest Quarter-Finals assignment has fallen on the lap of the Kazakhs. Import Trevin Parks has been underwhelming, and it’s just highly unlikely that Pael Micheev, Mikhail Yevstigneyev and Pavel Ilin can power this team past title contender Al Riyad.
