Mexico will host the FIBA U16 Americas Championships

MIAMI (USA) - The FIBA U16 Americas Championships will be played in Mexico between 23 and 29 of August in the cities of Xalapa and Guanajuato.

The USBI gymnasium at the Universidad Veracruzana, in Xalapa, will host the boys’ competition, with the participation of the national teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

La Feria Dome in Leon, Guanajuato, will host the girls' tournament, which will have the teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States. Both events will take place simultaneously in both venues.

The draw for both competitions will be held the 10th of August at 8pm ET to determine the seeding of each participating federation.

"It is an honor to have Mexico back at FIBA’s competitions. The hosting of both FIBA U16 Americas Championships in Xalapa and Guanajuato is a testament of the potential and passion for our sport in Mexico. After some governmental health protocols issued by Chile and Argentina that prevented us from playing these events in South America, Mexico, under the leadership of President Modesto Robledo, were able to quickly step in and secure hosting. I want to extend my gratitude to the National Federations of Argentina, Chile, and Mexico for the collaboration, professionalism, and support during these challenging times of pandemic." said the Executive Director of FIBA in the Americas, Carlos Alves.

The eight (8) participating teams were qualified through the Nike Youth Rankings for each subzone and the top four teams in each tournament will qualify for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022.

This event will continue to follow FIBA COVID protocols to ensure the safety of players and all the participants.
