BAL Group G - Eight teams, three spots. Who advance to the Regular Season?

YAOUNDE (Cameroon) - For six days starting Tuesday, November 26, eight Group G clubs will do battle in Yaounde in the 'Elite 16' for the right to qualify to the Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2020 regular season starting in March.

The eight-team West Division will take place at the emblematic Palais Polyvalent des Sports in the Cameroonian capital city of Yaounde.

After sealing three Group C wins in as many games, hosts Forces Armees et de Police (FAP) - the only undefeated team so far - are the team to beat, and they won't be short tough opponents..

The Cameroonians have been drawn  in the Elite 16's Group A alongside Nigelec Basket Club of Niger, Algeria's Groupement Sportif des Pétroliers and Al Naser from Libya while Group B consists of Abidjan Basketball Club from Cote d'Ivoire, BC Mazembe of DR Congo, Gabon's Manga Basketball and AS Police from Mali.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Semi-Finals, where the teams that finish in the first three places will qualify for the Basketball African League regular season in March 2020.

So, who can move on and who can see their BAL 2020 dream come to an end this week?

As the most experienced team in the tournament, GSP have never hidden their continental aspirations, After winning every possible title domestically, GSP  target a place among the best twelve teams in the regular season. And based on their three First Round games (2-1) last month in Bamako, the Algerians are legitimate contenders to move beyond Sunday.

As well as counting with services of Chad's international Michael Koibe, GSP count on seven Algeria internationals on their roster.

Last month in the Gabonese city of Libreville, although FAP destroyed Guinea Equatorial's Virgen Maria de Africa 101-46, they needed to step up to beat Manga Basketball and ASB Mazembe.

Even though FAP will be put to the test, home-court advantage might play a part and they can't be ruled out from contention.

Manga BB advanced to the Second Phase of the tournament on the back of a 2-1 mark while ASB Mazembe benefited from a wild card. The former can't be underestimated especially because of their prowess shooting the ball from beyond the arc.

The Ivorians of ABC may have been relatively absent from the continental scene in recent years.  But winning 3 of their First Round games in Cotonou last month says volumes about their BAL 2020 ambitions. Who doesn't remember their FIBA Africa Champions Cup 2005 title?

One of the most intriguing teams in the 'Elite' 16 are clearly Niger's Nigelec Basket Club, who claimed a 3-1 record in the Group Phase.

So far, champions from Angola, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia have their places ensured in the 12-team BAL regular with six other teams aiming to participate in the inaugural BAL - an NBA competition in partnership with FIBA.
