Costa do Sol book mouthwatering Semi-Final with rival Ferroviario de Maputo, Sporting take on Inter

MAPUTO (Mozambique) -  All eyes will be on the Mozambican capital as Ferroviario de Maputo will take on Costa da Sol in the Semi-Final of the 2022 FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women on Friday.

It's the rematch of the 2022 MozambiqueLeague Final, which saw Africa Champions Cup Women debutant lift the domestic title.

Ferroviario, who won their Quarter-Final encounter against CNSS 75-43, expanded little energy in progressing to the Last Four.

There was only one team in this clash, which sadly did not live up to expectations. CNSS were flat and were always second best in all facets of the game.

Ferroviario asserted themselves from the first quarter. The Mozambicans  finished the opening quarter with 38-14 lead, and for the rest of the game, they piled on the points until the final whistle.

Ferroviario captain Dulce Mabjaia put up 21 points, while Anabela Cossa scored 13, and Caitlyn Jenkins had a double-double (10 points and 13 rebounds).

"We won, and now I need the players to rest and prepare ourselves for the Semi-Final (against Costa do Sol). We are going to play hard, and we hope for a spectacular game," said Ferroviario coach Nasir Sale.

COSTA DO SOL EASY PAST ASC VILLE

Costa do Sol put in a polished performance against ASC Ville de Dakar to book their ticket to the Last Four.

Costa do Sol won 53-37 and were led in scoring by Vilma Covane, who had 11 points in the game.

ASC did try to make a game of it in the first quarter, but Costa do Sol dominated the last three-quarters of the game to continue their dream run in the competition.

"I am happy and want to congratulate my players on this achievement. They performed well, and now we have to focus on tomorrow (Friday)," said Costa coach Leonel Manhique. "Hopefully we will play Ferroviario."

SPORTING PASS TOUGH KPA TEST

Alexandria Sporting Club took the second Semi-Final spot after grinding out a 76-70 win over Kenya Ports Authority.

Sporting shook off the disappointment of their final group game defeat against Ferroviario de Maputo to seal a six-point victory over the Kenyan club.

Americans Cierra Dillard (22), Shayla Cooper (20) and Norhan Ahmed (12) showed up for the Sporting in a game that both teams sweat buckets to win, but it was the composure of the Egyptians that saw them pull through in the last minutes of a game that had 12 lead changes.

"It was one of the toughest games we have played in the tournament. Our opponents did not give up, and I appreciate them for make it a great game. I also happy what my girls. They listened to me, they hustled, and some of their best defence," said Sporting coach Mohamed Abdelrahman.

Sporting will face Inter Clube in the Semi-Final on Friday. After their exploits against KPA, Abdelrahman will need his players to have energy reserves for the duel against the Angolans.

"Maybe our minds were on the game against Inter tomorrow, and that is why we performed the way we did today. We knew beating them (KPA) meant we would face Inter. Hopefully, we will win that game and make it to the final," said Abdelrahman.

INTERCLUBE RETURN TO THE FINAL FOR FOURTH TIME IN A ROW

Interclube took their group phase form into the knockout stages. The Angolan club eased past APR 94-53 to book their place in the tournament semi-finals.

Interclube were 4-0 at the end of group play and got win No. 5 with the win over APR.

Led by Cristine Matiquite's 17 points and Jessica Malagi's 16 points in their 41-point blowout victory against the Rwandan club, Inter will step confidently into the final four, knowing they have earned their tag as tournament favourites.

Inter coach Julian Martinez felt, at times, during the game, his team did not take game seriously, but was happy they made it to the last four of the competition.

"Yes, we have taken the next step, but the quarter-finals are always tricky. Some teams play them like they are a final, and others tend to lose their respect for this stage. So it was a bit tricky for us. Nonetheless, I am happy we are going to the semi-final," said Martinez. "We know we are going a tough round of the competition, and the teams that progress will be difficult to play against, but I know my team is ready."
