Maputo - Host City

Maputo (formerly Lourenço Marques) is the capital of Mozambique, East Africa, and a port city on the Indian Ocean whose Portuguese colonial architecture is perfectly preserved.

Many turn-of-the-century buildings can be found in the downtown Baixa district, lined with jacaranda trees. For example, the railway station, which has a bronze dome, was completed in 1916.

The Baixa district also includes an extensive municipal market, located near Praça da Independência, the seat of the neoclassical town hall.

Maputo is a major city in Southern Africa and the capital of Mozambique. Bathed by the Indian Ocean, it is located 77 km from the South African border.

Founded by Portuguese settlers as Lourenço Marques, in honor of the navigator and explorer, the city was renamed Maputo on February 3, 1976 by the authorities of the newly established and independent People's Republic of Mozambique.
