MONASTIR, THE TOURIST TOWN

Monastir, is a coastal city in the Tunisian Sahel, in east-central Tunisia, located on a peninsula southeast of the Gulf of Hammamet, about 20 kilometers east of Sousse and 162 kilometers south of Tunis. In 2014, the population of the municipality reached 93,306 inhabitants.

Monastir has a soccer stadium, the Mustapha-Ben-Jannet stadium, where the Union sportive monastirienne plays. The Mohamed-Mzali sports hall of Monastir, the third covered hall of the country with a capacity of 4 075 seats, was inaugurated on April 8, 2006.

One of Monastir's most important historical landmarks is the Medina, a labyrinth of narrow, colorful streets that is home to many historical buildings, such as the Ribat, a citadel that dates back to the 8th century. The Ribat houses a museum of Islamic arts with hundreds of works of art. Do not miss the great mosque and the mausoleum of Bourguiba in the heart of the great cemetery of Monastir.

TRANSPORTATION

The city of Monastir proposes various modes of transport, Bus, Taxi or Car to the choice.

The bus: At the bus station located in the city center, you will find several lines serving the city intra-muros.

 To get around the city, use cabs, but be aware that some do not have meters and that you must agree on the price with the driver. To leave the city, you can take the metro line that connects Monastir to Sousse or rent a car in Monastir.

HEALTH

Vaccination against yellow fever is compulsory and the international vaccination booklet is checked on arrival. Vaccination against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever and meningitis is also recommended.

A Covid vaccination pass is also recommended.

MONASTIR AIRPORT

Operated since 1968, the international airport of Monastir Habib-Bourguiba serves Monastir and makes travel more than 3.5 million passengers per year. It is located 8 kilometers west of Monastir. Almost all flights are charters concentrated during the tourist season. Thus, 200 European airports, 21 African and three Middle Eastern are connected to the airport.  With a capacity of 3,500,000 passengers per year, the terminal covers 28,000 m2. The airport is named after the former president Habib Bourguiba who was born in Monastir.

ARENA

The Mohamed-Mzali sports hall or simply Mzali hall is a sports hall mainly dedicated to basketball.

Named after Mohamed Mzali, former Prime Minister and Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee, it houses the local basketball club, the Union Sportive Monastirienne. The room was inaugurated on April 8, 2006 by Abdallah Kaâbi, Minister of Youth, Sport and Physical Education.
