FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 medals revealed at ceremony

VALENCIA (Spain) - The medals that will be handed out to the teams occupying the podium at the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 have been presented at a ceremony in Valencia.

With only 35 days remaining until the tournament tips off in the cities of Strasbourg and Valencia, the revealing of the medals has added to the sense of anticipation ahead of the flagship event.

The design of the medals has taken into account the rhombus-shaped Valencia City Council shield and also the branding of the event, with the number 21 as the main element.  Also manufactured locally in Valencia, the medals each weigh approximately 500 grams and are made of bronze, and bathed in gold, silver and copper.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of the Generalitat Valenciana, Vicent Marza; the Managing Director of Sports of the city of Valencia, Pilar Bernabe; the Sports Deputy of the Valencia Provincial Council, Andres Campos; plus the Director of International Relations of the French Basketball Federation, Goran Radonjic; and the President of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Jorge Garbajosa.

"This presentation of the medals is another example of teamwork," declared Garbajosa, who underlined the strength of sharing the event with co-hosts, France.

“When the adventure of this FIBA Women's EuroBasket began, the first commitment was with the French Federation, with the aim of giving a quality leap to women's basketball.

"Our commitment remains very much intact, despite very difficult circumstances. We are doing it all responsibly by looking to the future and hoping that the fans can enjoy the best basketball. After the logo and the mascot, the third great moment of promotion of a tournament is the presentation of these medals."

The enthusiasm of Garbajosa was shared by Director of International Relations for the French Basketball Federation, Goran Radonjic who added: “We are rivals on the court, but joining forces outside of it.

"We are the two of the best National Federations in all of Europe. Spain has won nine medals, three of them gold, in the last 20 years. France, in the same period, has won seven medals of which two were gold.

"On the court we have been tough rivals, but we have joined forces to promote women's basketball in Europe, to work together and to promote our sport," he concluded.
