Meet the FIBA WASL West Asia teams: Al-Ittihad Ahli

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - Al-Ittihad Ahli will look to settle some unfinished business as they are set to see action in Season 2 of the FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL).

After what happened in their Season 1 campaign, the ball club from Syria is surely motivated to write a much more memorable chapter this time, with the hope that it ends with gold.

History

Al-Ittihad Ahli Basketball was founded in 1951, two years after the establishment of the Al-Ittihad of Aleppo Sports Club. It then became one of the most successful teams in the country, having won 17 Syrian Basketball League championships as well as titles in the Syrian Cup and the Super Cup.

Path to FIBA WASL

Al-Ittihad Ahli made their way into FIBA WASL's second season following a runner-up finish in the 2022-23 Syrian Basketball League. They are pooled in Group A of the FIBA WASL-West Asia League with returning teams Shahrdari Gorgan and Al Naft, and another debutant in Sagesse.

Players to watch

The veteran tandem of Nadim Issa and Anthouny Bakar will once again spearhead Al-Ittihad Ahli's campaign in the upcoming season, which begins with FIBA WASL-Gulf action on November 13.

Among their reinforcements, meanwhile, is Swedish-Icelandic Andree Michelson, who represented the Syrian men's team in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2023.

Sharing duties with Michelsson are two more 26-year-old players in former Ole Miss guard Brian Halums and Will Brown, a 2.08 M (6'10") center.
