BAMAKO (FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017) – Hosts Mali cruised to a comfortable victory over Egypt 90-50 to book their place in the Semi-Finals of the ongoing FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017 on Friday at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga in Bamako, Mali.
Naignouma Coulibaly registered an impressive double double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to ensure the home side are on course to their ultimate target - which is winning the title at home but one step at a time.
Captain Meiya Tirera and Nassira Traore added 11 and 10 points in that order but it was the execution of a ruthless offensive strategy in the third quarter that saw the Malians run away with the victory.
Meanwhile, the reigning champions Senegal overcame an early challenge from Cameroon to win 71-58 and march into the Semi-Finals and closer to defending their title and an eye on a record 13th crown.
Usual suspect Astou Traore was at it top scoring with 21 points to affirm her place at the heart of Senegal's charge to the top and if her teammate Aya Traore's tight hug at the end of the game is anything to go by then a lot more awaits Mozambique when they face off on Saturday for a place in the Final.
Nigeria maintained their 100% winning streak at the tournament with a rather comfortable victory against Cote d'Ivoire 98-43 to also remain the only unbeaten side at the biennial continental competition.
In the highlight of the Quarter-Finals, Mozambique shocked title favorites Angola in a remarkable victory 61-47 anchored by forward Leia Dongue who plies her trade for Angolan league side Primeiro de Agosto.
The Finalists will automatically book their slots to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018 set to be held in Spain.
