Mozambique shock Angola to make Semi-Finals

BAMAKO (FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017) – Title favourites Angola were stunned by Mozambique in their Quarter-Final tie 61-47 on Friday at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga in Bamako, Mali to book the second Semi-Final slot at the ongoing FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017.

Leia Dongue scored a game high 27 points and picked 14 rebounds to guide Nasir Sale's side to victory on a day the Angolans would like to forget.

Angola enjoyed a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter 16-6 but a strong comeback in the second quarter led by Dongue who dropped 13 of Mozambique's 17 including a three-point buzzer beater at Half--Time to lead 23-20.

Mozambique were unstoppable thereafter scoring 22 points in the third quarter including two big three-pointers from Elizabeth Pereira to further crash Angola's hopes of a comeback.

Nevertheless Angola attempted to bounce back through star player Italee Lucas but the Mozambicans had established a double-digit cushion for them to worry about a late comeback.

Lucas was the only Angolan player with double digits - 18 points, seven rebounds and six steals but her solo efforts were not enough to help Angola to victory, ending their unbeaten run of five games.

Mozambique joins Nigeria in the last four and will wait to know their opponents between Mali who face Egypt and Senegal that take on Cameroon.

The Finalists at this tournament will qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018 in Spain.
