    This summer's FIBA U18 Women's EuroBasket got off to a scorching start in Stockholm.

    STOCKHOLM (Sweden) - Spain started their title defense with a victory, but it was Italy's Sofia Zuccon who stole the show with a stellar showing to put hosts Sweden to the sword on the opening day.

    Italy’s Sofia Zuccon dominated the boards as she led her side to an 84-75 win over the hosts and last year's Division B champions, Sweden. Zuccon pulled down an astounding 21 rebounds, with 11 of those coming on the offensive glass. She also poured in 14 points and dished out 3 assists in a deserved victory.

    Despite dropping to a 72-64 loss to Latvia, Croatia’s Olivia Vukosa was outstanding as she amassed a massive 24 points, 22 rebounds and 4 blocks. But it was to no avail.

    Finland xx-xx Belgium

    Belgium got a measure of revenge for last year’s Semi-Final loss to Finland by beating them in their tournament opener 69-65. Forward Aurelie Vanderstraeten led the way for the victors with 26 points and 4 rebounds.

    Poland began their campaign in the best possible way with a resounding 75-52 success over Serbia. They were expertly led by Helena Danielewicz. The talented guard went 8-for-13 from the field, finishing with a game-high 20 points. She also pulled down 6 rebounds and got 2 blocks.

    Champions Spain got their campaign going with a convincing 80-31 victory over Slovenia. Anna Smykovskaia wasted no time in making her mark in their first game, as she scored 19 points on 69 percent shooting and 8 rebounds in just 19 minutes.
