LUSAKA - Zambian Basketball organisations are keen to resurface and promote their basketball programmes with several activities aimed at a youth population.

One of those organisations is the Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) which is hosting the African Clubs Cup qualifier currently taking place in the country's capital city of Lusaka from 28 October to 2 November.

The event gathers top male and female teams from Southern Africa.

The field in the men's tournament includes the teams from Primeiro D'Agosto, Libolo and Petro de Luanda (Angola); Matero Magic and UNZA Pacers (Zambia); JBC and Cameo BB (Zimbabwe); Ferroviaro da Beira (Mozambique).

The filed in the women's tournament consists of Politecnica (Mozambique), Primeiro D’Angola and Inter Clube de Luanda (both from Angola), Shells and Unza Honeys from Zambia.

The top two teams in each tournament will qualify automatically for the Final Round of the African Clubs Cup to be played later this year.

As well as the African Clubs Cup qualifier, the ZBA also agreed earlier this year a partnership with UK Sport and Durham University for administrative support to assist the development plans for a new junior basketball league in the country.

According to the Durham University webpage, basketball is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the country, following an increasing number of children with access to the game in school.

This increased participation has led to the demand of a national youth league, which currently operates in the capital city Lusaka.
