BRUSSELS (Belgium) - Belgium have promoted Rachid Meziane to the head coach role for the upcoming FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifying window after ending their collaboration with Valery Demory.

BRUSSELS (Belgium) - Belgium have promoted Rachid Meziane to the head coach role for the upcoming FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifiers window after ending their collaboration with Valery Demory.

The current Villeneuve d'Ascq playcaller is the third person to hold the position in just over a year and will have limited time to make an impact with the Qualifiers window taking place in coming weeks. However, the former Cavigal Nice and BLMA coach stepping up from the assistant role, so knows the players well.

Having dispensed with the services of long-serving coach Philip Mestdagh after the Tokyo Olympics last year,  Demory was brought in but struggled to make an impact.

Meziane was assistant coach to fellow French playcaller Valery Demory

The Cats lost against Bosnia and Herzegovina in last year's Women's EuroBasket Qualifiers and didn't impress at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 in Sydney, not helped by an injury during the tournament to marquee star Emma Meesseman.

The immediate task for Meziane as he steps up is to focus the forthcoming window, with a meeting against underdogs North Macedonia and then a crunch meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
