Sarr appointed as head coach of Senegal women's team

DAKAR (FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018) - Cheikh Sarr has been appointed as the head coach of Senegal women's team.

DAKAR (FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018) -  Cheikh Sarr has been appointed as the head coach of Senegal women's team.

The 49-year-old, who led Senegal to two consecutive Third-Places at FIBA AfroBasket in 2013 and 2015, replaces his fellow Senegalese Moustapha Gaye, a two-time FIBA Women's AfroBasket winner.

Sarr will be assisted by Khardiata Diop, a 2000 Sydney Olympian, who becomes the first-ever female top coach in the history of Senegal women's national team.

The move comes as Senegal begin their preparation plans for the next year's FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain.

As runners-up at last August's FIBA Women's AfroBasket, Senegal - along with African champions Nigeria - will represent the continent at World Cup.

Nevertheless, Sarr is not new to world cup competition. Back in 2014, his Senegal team took the world by a storm by defeating European heavyweights Croatia.

Next year's 16-team FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup will run from September 22-30 in Tenerife, Spain.
