GENEVA (London 2012) - The USA women's national team qualified for the 2012 Olympic Basketball Tournament by winning the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women in impressive fashion.

The Americans were unopposed as they cruised to the final where they faced hosts Czech Republic. After a slow start in the gold medal game, Geno Auriemma's charges pulled away in the second half for an 89-69 win.

Relying on a brand of unselfish basketball - eight players averaged 8.5 points per game or more - the Americans were no match for their opponents as they finished undefeated (9-0).

USA legends Lisa Leslie and Katie Smith led by example as the USA took gold medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics as well as the 1998 and 2002 FIBA World Championships.

With the pair bringing their stellar international career to a close in Beijing, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Swin Cash and Tamika Catchings stepped into the breach in the Czech Republic and asserted themselves as the leaders of this new generation.

Young up-and-coming players also contributed to the USA's success with Tina Charles following up her WNBA Rookie of the Year campaign with an equally impressive and mature display for the national team.

Maya Moore displayed some of the brilliance that made her the number one pick in the 2011 WNBA draft, while Angel McCoughtry and Candice Dupree provided valuable scoring.

As they head to London, the USA will look to keep alive their impressive run in the Olympic Basketball Tournament for Women, where they have come away with the gold medal the last four times.
