MUNICH (Germany) - The First Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers is now in the books, and the road to Qatar has become a little clearer, with 24 teams advancing to the Second Round.

Throughout the final qualifying window, a number of young prospects played key roles and emerged as difference makers, giving their national teams a glimpse of the future.

In this piece, we highlight 12 prospects born in 2003 or later who delivered standout performances during the third qualifying window.

    Nikola Jovic - Serbia

    Power Forward

    Birth Date: June 09, 2003 (23 years old) Height: 2.08m (6ft 10in) Stats: 27 PPG, 2.5 APG, 2.5 BPG, 2 RPG, 0.5 SPG

Serbia finished strong, winning both games during the window and qualifying for the Second Round. Jovic played a key role in both contests, putting up 22 points and 5 assists against Switzerland before exploding for 32 points and 3 blocks against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Jovic's scoring efficiency and three-point marksmanship are weapons he already showcased during the most recent FIBA EuroBasket and the Olympic Tournament. In this window, however, he also made an impact with his rim protection, blocking five shots over the two games.

Despite his young age, Jovic has already become a key starter for Serbia, and with performances like the ones he delivered during this window, he should be expected to be a difference-maker for years to come.

    Kasparas Jakucionis - Lithuania

    Forward

    Birth Date: May 29, 2006 (20 years old) Height: 1.96m (6ft 5in) Stats: 13 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 4.5 APG, 1 SPG

Lithuania split both games during this window, qualifying for the Second Round with a 3-3 record. Jakucionis made an impact in both contests, but was especially masterful against Great Britain, where he finished with 16 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. The 20-year-old impressed with his ability to attack the rim and, especially, with his passing vision, consistently finding open shooters on the perimeter and showing tremendous chemistry with Jonas Valanciunas in the pick-and-roll.

Despite these being Jakucionis' first two games with the senior national team, the Milwaukee Bucks' newest addition already looks like Lithuania's point guard of the future.

    Hugo Gonzalez - Spain

    Forward

    Birth Date: February 5, 2006 (20 years old) Height: 1.99m (6ft 6in) Stats: 12.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2 SPG, 1 BPG

Spain qualified atop Group A, with its only defeat coming in an overtime thriller against Georgia in the final game of the window. Gonzalez, who is coming off a strong rookie season with the Boston Celtics, showcased his two-way impact in both contests, creating defensive events at a high rate while also contributing with his three-point shooting and ability to make plays on the move.

Spain is in something of a transitional period, with a generation of young players like Izan Almansa and Mario Saint-Supery beginning to establish themselves as key pieces of the national team. Gonzalez's impact during this qualifying window gives Spain even more reason to be optimistic about the future.

    Stefan Vaaks - Estonia

    Shooting Guard

    Birth Date: May 08, 2005 (21 years old) Height: 1.98m (6ft 6in) Stats: 19.5 PPG, 6 APG, 2.5 RPG, 0.5 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Despite finishing with a 3-3 record, Estonia topped Group H and qualified for the Second Round. During this window, Vaaks stepped into a lead scorer and creator role for Estonia, and he was masterful, averaging 19.5 points and 6.0 assists over two games. The 21-year-old showcased an impressive combination of size, shot-making ability off the dribble, and passing vision, allowing him to create scoring opportunities both for himself and his teammates.

Vaaks' performance during this window was a continuation of the strong play he showed at Providence during his freshman season in the NCAA, and perhaps a glimpse of the massive impact he could continue to make for Estonia as one of the country's best prospects in recent years.

    Stefan Joksimovic - Slovenia

    Shooting Guard

    Birth Date: November 16, 2008 (17 years old) Height: 2.01m (6ft 7in) Stats: 10.2 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.2 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Joksimovic came into this window as one of the top European prospects eligible for next year's NBA Draft, and he certainly lived up to the hype, especially against Sweden, where he put up 22 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in just 19 minutes. At just 17 years old, Joksimovic is one of the most versatile prospects in the world, able to make an impact as a slasher, three-point shooter and secondary creator, while also possessing the tools to contribute on the defensive end.

It's still early, but with how impactful he has been at such a young age, it's hard not to project Joksimovic as a potential top-five pick in next year's NBA Draft and a future cornerstone of the Slovenian national team.

    Maxime Raynaud - France

    Center

    Birth Date: April 7, 2003 (23 years old) Height: 2.16m (7ft 1in) Stats: 13 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1 APG, 0.5 SPG

France finished the First Round atop Group G, winning both games during this window, and Raynaud played a key role in both contests, averaging 13.0 points per game while shooting 71.4 percent from the field. The Sacramento Kings center, who was recently named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, had a productive and efficient window in his senior national team debut, contributing with his ability to create for himself in the post, set screens, finish around the basket and dominate the glass.

With France possessing tremendous depth in the frontcourt, Raynaud certainly showed during this window that he can be a valuable rotation piece going forward with his prolific rebounding and efficient scoring.

    Adem Bona - Türkiye

    Power Forward

    Birth Date: March 28, 2003 (23 years old) Height: 2.06m (6ft 9in) Stats: 10.5 PPG, 6 RPG, 2.5 BPG

Türkiye had a dominant First Round, finishing as one of just two undefeated teams in the field, and added even more talent during this window with Bona available for the first time in these qualifiers. The Philadelphia 76ers center averaged 10.5 points while leading the team in rebounds and blocks, playing his role as an energy big to perfection by complementing Alperen Sengun's post scoring and playmaking with explosive interior finishing, rebounding and rim protection.

Bona was already a key player for Türkiye during the team's silver-medal run at FIBA EuroBasket 2025. With a level of explosive interior finishing and rim protection that few players in Europe possess, his role and minutes should continue to grow in future competitions.

    Bobi Klintman - Sweden

    Forward

    Birth Date: March 6, 2003 (23 years old) Height: 2.06m (6ft 9in) Stats: 17 PPG, 10 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.5 SPG

Klintman, one of the most highly touted prospects to come out of Sweden in recent years, finally made his senior national team debut and was extremely productive, averaging a double-double (17 points and 10 rebounds) during the window for a team that desperately needed that type of production. Sweden entered the final qualifying window with a 1-3 record but secured qualification with a pair of wins.

The recent Virtus Bologna signee made an impact offensively with his unique combination of size, ball-handling and shooting, while also making his presence felt on the boards. That level of versatility makes him an extremely valuable piece for the future of Swedish basketball and could make him a difference-maker during the Second Round of the qualifiers.

    Nordin Kapic - Austria

    Center

    Birth Date: March 30, 2003 (23 years old) Height: 2.03m (6ft 8in) Stats: 14 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Austria finished its participation in the European Qualifiers by dropping both games during this window. The good news for the team was Nordin Kapic's senior national team debut. One of Austria's most productive players at the youth level also proved impactful with the senior team, averaging 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds over two games. Kapic made an impact around the basket as both a finisher and rebounder, using his combination of size, toughness and touch through contact.

While Austria didn't qualify for the World Cup, it has in Kapic a player who can anchor the interior for years to come.

    Matteo Spagnolo - Italy

    Guard

    Birth Date: January 10, 2003 (23 years old) Height: 1.93m (6ft 4in) Stats: 13.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 4.5 APG, 1 SPG

Spagnolo has already developed into a key backcourt piece for an Italian team that finished the qualifiers with a pair of wins, advancing to the Second Round as the top team in Group D. The 23-year-old averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 assists during the window, serving as a tremendous offensive catalyst by creating scoring opportunities at the rim with his speed and fluid ball-handling while also setting up teammates for open shots.

Spagnolo's role with Italy has steadily grown through his multiple appearances, including important minutes at the most recent FIBA EuroBasket and FIBA Basketball World Cup. He should be expected to be one of Italy's most important backcourt pieces over the next few years.

    Gustav Drejer Erichsen - Denmark

    Guard

    Birth Date: February 21, 2009 (17 years old) Height: 1.97m (6ft 6in) Stats: 5.3 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 0.7 SPG, 0.3 APG, 0.3 BPG

Denmark were eliminated after going winless in the First Round. However, there was a silver lining in the number of young players who stepped into key roles during these qualifiers. Players aged 23 or younger such as Tobias Jensen, Gustav Knudsen, Dane Erikstrup, Jermaine Ballisager Webb and Frederik Jellum all contributed for the team.

During this window, it was Gustav Erichsen's turn. The 17-year-old received extended playing time against Ukraine and responded with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Erichsen made an impact all over the floor, consistently attacking the basket with his combination of 1.97m size and ball-handling ability, while his relentless motor made him a factor as both a rebounder and versatile defender.

    Sananda Fru - Germany

    Center

    Birth Date: August 28, 2003 (22 years old) Height: 2.09m (6ft 10in) Stats: 8.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 1 SPG, 0.5 APG

The reigning world champions finished the First Round with a 5-1 record, picking up a pair of wins in the final qualifying window. One of Germany's additions for this window was Fru, who made an impactful and efficient senior national team debut, averaging 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 75 percent from the field over the two contests.

Fru, who will play next season in the NCAA after transferring to Marquette, made an impact in the pick-and-roll game by setting hard screens and converting catch-and-finish opportunities around the basket, while also contributing as a rebounder and rim protector. His ability to add value without the ball in his hands could earn him a rotation spot with Germany over the next few years.
