VALENCIA (Liga Profesional) - Trotamundos look unstoppable in Venezuela`s Liga Profesional after they stretched their lead at the top of the standings with three victories in the past week. They began with a 103-94 away triumph over Panteras from Miranda on Wednesday, Richard Lugo starring for the winners with 29 points and 13 rebounds.

Lugo stands a good chance of representing Venezuela at the FIBA World Championship in Japan. The leaders then completed a weekend double over second-placed Gaiteros from Zulia, although they needed to dig deep to win both games.

It was 86-74 on Saturday and 96-93 one day later, with Lawrence Wallace the outstanding figure for Trotamundos, claiming 21 points in the later fixture. The victories mean the leaders now boast 19 wins and only six defeats.

Gaiteros were coming off a 107-89 defeat of Cocodrilos from Caracas at the Belisario Aponte stadium, with Miguel Marriaga pouring in 26 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Marinos from Anzoategui won the East derby against Guaiquiries from Margarita this weekend.

On Saturday, the reigning champions celebrated an 85-83 victory with Jermaine Walker and Hector Romero each scoring 26 points. The margin was bigger on Sunday as Marinos won 83-65 in Puerto La Cruz, Romero this time pouring in 15 points as did team-mate Jhonell Smith.

It was a good recovery for Marinos, who started the week with an 86-72 defeat away to Guaros from Lara. However, Guaros could not maintain their winning run as, just as they did on their visit to Cocodrilos, they suffered consecutive defeats.

Firstly, they were beaten 100-94, surrendering 28 points to Victor Diaz. Then, Cocodrilos needed overtime to win 104-103 with Juan Herrera pouring in 25 points. Cordell Henry`s 28 points, five rebounds and four assists were not enough for Guaros.

Finally, in Maturin, Gatos beat Panteras from Miranda 102-93 on Saturday, but Sunday's duel was not played because of the death of Panteras president, Mariano Gomez Leiva.
