VALENCIA (Liga Profesional) - Venezuelan national team star Richard Lugo poured in 34 points for Trotamundos as the Carabobo-based side destroyed Cocodrilos from Caracas to advance to the six-team second stage of the Liga Profesional.
Trotamundos are the first team to progress, and it comes as no surprise as they have been leading the league for several weeks.
They were in top form at home against Cocodrilos, recording a 112-97 triumph.
Lugo, who barring injury will play at the FIBA World Championship in Japan later this year for his country, was also important in last Wednesday's 94-92 victory over Guaros.
He had 21 points while Jose Vargas and Ludwing Irazabal weighed in with 20 points apiece.
Trotamundos have 23 victories and seven defeats and they are followed in the table by Marinos, who won twice this week to improve to 18-12.
The Anzoategui-based side defeated seventh-placed Gatos from Monagas 90-73 on Sunday.
Hector Romero shone for the winners with 27 points.
Johnell Smith contributed 15 and Jermaine Walker 12.
Four days earlier, Romero and Walker had 26 points apiece as Marinos beat bottom side Panteras from Miranda 86-71.
Lara-based Guaros are third in the standings with an 18-13 mark.
They lost to Trotamundos last week but bounced back on Sunday by beating Guaiquiries from Margarita 83-77.
Diego Guevara scored 19 points for the team coached by Nestor Salazar. The setback has left Guaiquiries fifth in the standings.
Gaiteros from Zulia were surprisingly beaten by Panteras 91-90 on Sunday evening, but they are still fourth.
Dennis D'Addezio and Gregory Vargas scored 16 points each for the winners, who clinched their seventh victory in 31 games, while Ruben Nembhard recorded 15 in defeat.
Gaiteros could not repeat what they did on Wednesday, when they trashed Guaiquiries 112-89.
The top-six teams in the standings make it into the second stage in which teams will play home-and-away ties against each other before the play-offs.
