CARACAS (FIBA Americas Championship) – The 10-team line-up for the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship is now known after the South American Championship reached the semi-final stage.
Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Venezuela have reached the last four to book their place for next year’s Americas tournament, which will double up as a qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Those four teams will join Canada and the United States from North America, while Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands booked their place in the recent Centrobasket tournament.
The FIBA Americas Championship will provide two places in the 2008 Olympics, while the teams ranked third, fourth and fifth will have to play in the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament alongside nine other national teams, with three Olympic places up for grabs.
In the last FIBA Americas tournament, which took place in Puerto Rico in 2003, the hosts, Argentina and the US qualified for Athens 2004. Argentina went on to win the gold medal, while the US were third and Puerto Rico sixth.
