    Calm presence drives Philippines' competitiveness

SHENZHEN (China) – In just her second FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, Vanessa De Jesus has emerged as the stabilizing force of the Philippines. Though still early in her international career, De Jesus carries the weight of leadership both on and off the court. That's a responsibility she has accepted with quiet confidence and maturity beyond her years.

At 13.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 three-pointers per game, De Jesus’s numbers tell only part of the story. What truly defines her is the calm leadership and guidance she provides her teammates.

FIBA Women's Asia Cup debutante Sumayah Sugapong calls her "one of our leaders… someone I look to lean on for guidance and support."

Naomi Panganiban adds, "Ate V is such a mentor for me and everyone. We look up to her… I try to model my game after her maturity. She is so patient in getting to her spots. We're really lucky to have her on our team."

This respect from her younger teammates highlights the vital role De Jesus plays in a team still gaining experience on the international stage.

De Jesus herself understands the gravity of her role. Reflecting on the Philippines’ recent milestone victory over Lebanon, which secured a spot in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers 2026, she expressed pride and perspective.

"Oh my gosh, this is unbelievable. This win is for everyone back in the Philippines and for our country. It was really a team effort," she said.

Coach Patrick Aquino praised her impact, saying, "She's incredible and so consistent. She's a good leader for the young girls. I know she could probably bring our game to another level in the near future. I am so happy to have her and the girls for the next cycle. We are just thankful we're still part of this level, and we hope to try to get better."

The Philippines finished sixth place in this year’s competition, but their future looks bright with De Jesus as a cornerstone.

Her composure is no accident, of course.

"Being a point guard, being a leader—it starts from the top," De Jesus explained. "I have confidence in my game. I work every day with this team and with that, I just believe in myself. All the trust my teammates have in me also gives me confidence."

He poise enables De Jesus to thrive in pressure moments and keep the team grounded amid the intensity of international competition.

The Philippines may not yet be a powerhouse, but with Vanessa De Jesus as the steadying force—both a guiding mentor and a reliable scorer—Gilas Women carry hope and promise. Her blend of skill, maturity and leadership sets the foundation for the team’s ascent as they aim to leave a stronger mark in Asia and on the world stage.
