BOSTON (2010 FIBA World Championship) – Rajon Rondo appears to be in Team USA’s plans after all.
The Boston Celtics point guard, who turns 24 next week, was not in the 27-man national team roster for 2010-12 that was announced by USA Basketball last week.
Rondo told the Boston Globe that no one contacted him about being in the squad and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo has confirmed that Rondo could have a role with the team in the future.
“There may have been a little miscommunication on that one,’’ Colangelo said.
“The last go-around, he was unable to accept an invitation because he was going to be involved in Kendrick Perkins’s wedding. I was advised that he would not have interest but that may have been misinformation.
“But he’s a young player and there will be an opportunity in the future and we have a fluid roster to begin with. I’ve made that pretty clear. So we will revisit that. The door’s not closed.”
“It would be an honor to play,’’ Rondo said of playing for his country.
“I would go.’’
Rondo played for the United States at the 2005 FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina.
He is averaging 14.3 points, 9.7 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game for Boston this season.
