HOUSTON (NBA) - The Houston Rockets re-signed free agent center Dikembe Mutombo, the team announced on Monday.

A 16-year veteran, Congo-born Mutombo averaged 10.1 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in his career with six teams. Last season, the 7ft 2in Mutombo posted 3.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 block per game in 75 contests.

One of the most intimidating shot blockers in NBA history, Mutombo had regressed to a role player in recent seasons, providing teams with defense and rebounding in spurts.

But with starting Rockets center Yao Ming injured for much of last campaign, Mutombo started 33 games and was a defensive presence for Houston.

He even moved to second on the all-time blocks list with a season-high five on January 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers - moving past Hall-of-Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
