NEW YORK (NBA) - Labor strife has cost the NBA the remainder of the league’s games in the month of November.
As expected, failure to come up with a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in the latest talks has led NBA commissioner David Stern to announce that two more weeks of regular season games have been cancelled.
While some progress has been made on some issues keeping the two sides apart, owners and players are still arguing over how to share the NBA's basketball related income (BRI) and the structure of a new salary cap.
The former say they will not budge on a 50-50 split, while players last offered 52.5%.
Players received 57% of BRI under the previous CBA.
"Derek (Fisher) and I made it clear that we could not take the 50-50 deal to our membership, not with all the concessions that we granted," players union executive director Billy Hunter said.
"We said we got to have some dollars."
The NBA lockout began on July 1, following the expiration of the old CBA.
"We held out that joint hope together, but in light of the breakdown of talks, there will not be a full NBA season under any circumstances," Stern said.
"It's not practical, possible or prudent to have a full season now."
Many players have signed contracts with clubs overseas and will not return to the United States until the lockout is over.
