West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - The popularity of women 50 years and older playing in recreational basketball leagues seems to be gaining momentum across the U.S. Basketball groups for women in the "granny" stage of their lives have been found in IA, CA, DC, LA, CT NM, NC and PA.

In Waukee, IA, the senior women there have joined together to form the "Hot Pink Grannies" basketball team to stay fit and have fun doing it. Their uniforms don black bloomers and hot pink socks.

According to an AP report, Michael Rogers who is an associate professor of sports studies at Wichita State University stated that "You see more and more senior women's teams participating in state and national competitions and more recreational leagues."

Nowadays older women are seeking ways to stay fit, and organized team sports is appealing, particularly with basketball. This trend is expected to continue to grow.

Rogers also stated, "In the future it will be commonplace to have leagues like this."

The AP reports that an annual survey conducted by the National Sporting Goods Association indicates that women aged 55 years and over playing basketball at least 50 times per year has increased in numbers from 16,000 in 1995 to almost 131,000 in 2005.

Most leagues, even recreational, do require a doctor's approval before membership on the team is allowed. This stems from the fact that many health issues are at greater risk with the elderly. These risks must be assessed by a physician. Physical strengthening may be required before embarking on this fun team-spirited sport.

According to the Women's Sports Foundation's website, the professional women's basketball team, named the All American Red Heads, entertained fans through their travels across the U.S. for 50 years from 1936 to 1986. This team accordingly became the role models for many females in America.
