OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA) - Kevin Durant is a scoring machine, something NBA fans know only too well after watching the Oklahoma City star in action the past several years.
The MVP of the 2010 FIBA World Championship after leading Team USA to gold in Istanbul, Durant is prolific when it comes to putting the ball in the basket.
He erupted for a career-high 51 points for Oklahoma City in their 124-118 win in overtime against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
The scoring explosion is the biggest in the league this season.
Denver led by five in the last minute of regulation but Durant drilled a three-pointer to cut the gap to two and then tied it in the waning seconds with a drive to the basket.
"To have a great player take a game from you like that is just heart wrenching," said Nuggets coach George Karl.
When asked about passing the 50-point plateau for the first time, Durant answered: "It feels better to get the win but it is pretty cool.
"It's something you dream about as a kid."
Durant is not the only Thunder player to have captured gold in Turkey.
Oklahoma City teammate Russell Westbrook also played a vital role in that title-winning side and both he and Durant are among the finalists to compete for the United States at the London Games.
Westbrook helped his case on Sunday, too, because he had 40 points and nine assists.
There was another jaw-dropping performance by Oklahoma City as well with Spain international Serge Ibaka finishing with a triple-double in points (14), rebounds (15) and blocks (11).
Ibaka will represent Spain at the London Games.
"Kevin, Russell and Serge - it was an amazing thing to watch," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said.
