LOS ANGELES - In the lead up to each of the previous three football World Cups David Beckham was training hard with the England camp ahead of the beginning of the event. Not so this year, as Goldenballs - as he is known in his home country - sat back to watch a game played with an orange ball.

Indeed the LA Galaxy star, whose achilles injury has compromised his participation in South Africa, was spotted courtside cheering on the Lakers on Thursday night, as the Californians narrowly overcame the Phoenix Suns 103-101 to go 3-2 up in the Western Conference Final. After watching the game alongside Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, downing a rare beer in the process, Beckham congratulaed both teams and was pictured briefly chatting to Canada's Steve Nash, known to be a massive football fan.

Beckham attends basketball games on a regular basis. In 2008, he was in Beijing to witness the USA beating Spain 118-107 in the Olympic final in a game that has been labelled  one of the greatest basketball games in history.

Beckham will shortly be joining the England setup as an adviser but in the mean time, he will be cheering on his LA Lakers mates, who are just one win away from the Playoff finals.
