    USA - Elton branded one of the good guys

    NEW YORK (NBA) - Team USA forward Elton Brand been named the winner of the 2005/06 NBA Sportsmanship Award. 
     
    The Los Angeles Clippers All-Star, who is on the prelimenary roster for the FIBA World Championship, collected the trophy which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court - ethical behaviour, fair play, and integrity. 
     
    The trophy, first awarded in 1995/96 is named after former Detroit Pistons guard and Hall of Famer Joe Dumars, the award's first recipient. 
     
    Brand and the Clippers have a 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets in their first-round playoff series.  The franchise last won a post-season series in 1976, when it was known as the Buffalo Braves. 
     
    Brand received 83 first-place votes and 2,326 points to finish ahead of All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal of the Miami Heat, who got 73 first-place votes and 2,080 points. 
     
    Another All-Star center - China's Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets - was third in the voting. 
     
    The other divisional winners nominated for the award were Jacque Vaughn of the New Jersey Nets, Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls and Andrei Kirilenko of the Utah Jazz.
