     VALDIVIA (FIBA Americas Championship for Women) - United States of America won Gold in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship for Women by dominating Cuba 101-71. The most important part of the win is that they qualified directly to the 2008 Olympics while Cuba, Brazil and Argentina qualified into the World Pre-Olympic Tournament.

    The North American players never allowed the Cubans to be in the game like the first game of the tournament as they won the first quarter 29-13 and had a 49-30 halftime lead.

    Veteran Tina Thompson netted 18 points while Diana Taurasi and Katherine Smith scored 15 each.

    In a losing effort Suchitel Avila had 14, Oyanaisy Gelis 13 and Yakelyn Plutín 11.

    Cuban forward Yakelyn Plutín was named the tournament MVP by averaging 17.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
