LOS ANGELES (NCAA) - UCLA's international cast rolled to a second straight win Monday night as the No. 2 Bruins overpowered Youngstown 83-52 in Los Angeles.
Freshman Kevin Love once again stole the headlines with 21 points and nine rebounds while Lorenzo Mata-Real added 14 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.
Serbian forward Nikola Dragovic added 12 points off the bench while Cameroonian forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute enjoyed an efficient night's shooting, scoring nine points on four of six shooting while adding three assists.
His countryman Alfred Aboya had two points and three rebounds for the Bruins.
Most pleasing for coach Ben Howland was the performance of Mata-Real, who has been asked to step up at the start of the season with Darren Collison, one of the best point guards in the country, injured.
"Lorenzo Mata-Real played another great game, with 14 rebounds, 10 in the first half," Howland said. "That is his second double-double in four games this season."
Leading, 44-29, at halftime, UCLA opened the second half with a 19-4 run in just over 5 1/2 minutes to push the margin to 30 points, 63-33.
Love, the reigning National high school player of the year, followed up his 22-point, 13-rebound collegiate debut with another strong effort, scoring 12 of this points in the first half.
John Barber led Youngstown with 12 points. Polish guard Alek Mrozik scored three points off the bench but Vytas Sulskis, a Lithuanian freshman, had a frustrating night as he failed to register a point before fouling out midway through the second half.
Malik Hairston scored 29 points and Maarty Leunen contributed 18 and eight rebounds as No. 13 Oregon fought off a second-half surge for a 97-88 victory over Western Michigan in the finale of the World Vision Invitational.
Joevan Catron collected 17 points and 10 boards and Bryce Taylor also scored 17 for the Ducks (3-0)
"We are playing at a higher intensity now than we were at this point last season," Oregon coach Ernie Kent said. "We can get down the road and look back, and these are three games, three wins. We can't get too up or too down. We just want to get back in the gym."
Freshman phenom Eric Gordon lived up to all the hype for No. 8 Indiana, pouring in 33 points to rally the Hoosiers in a 99-79 victory over pesky Chattanooga.
Indiana, playing their season opener, had to erase a four-point halftime deficit to secure a 10 straight season-opening win and 23rd consecutive home opener.
Gordon, one of the nation' most acclaimed freshmen and a former Mr. Basketball in the state of Indiana, led the charge for the Hoosiers. The 6ft 4in guard scored 18 of his points after halftime, including four straight 3-pointers, to help Indiana build an 81-67 cushion with 8:41 to play.
"I was feeling it early, but that's what I expect to do," Gordon said. "I expect myself to score points and bring it on defense like Coach tells me."
Gordon, who many observers expect to play at the next level next year, showed his shooting-touch is NBA-ready, nailing many of his jumpers from well beyond the arc.
He was seven of 11 from 3-point range, helping the Hoosiers connect on 14 of 25.
Jon Scheyer scored 22 points off the bench to lead four players in double figures as No. 10 Duke breezed to an 86-61 victory over New Mexico State in Durham.
DeMarcus Nelson recorded 14 points and seven rebounds and Gerald Henderson netted 11 for coach Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils, who captured their 53rd straight win over a non-conference opponent at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
It was the second lopsided victory for Duke (2-0), who rolled to an effortless 121-56 win against North Carolina Central here in Friday's season-opener.
Lithuanian Martynas Pocius hit a fast-break one-handed jam to give Duke a 61-30 advantage at the 13:38 mark, and the Blue Devils never looked back.
Pocius, a junior swingman, had four points on two of three shooting in limited minutes off the bench.
Dominic James had a rough shooting night but still scored 13 points to lead No. 11 Marquette to a 66-55 victory over Utah Valley State.
James was just four of 12 from the field but still managed to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career.
He entered the game needing nine points and became the 38th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
The Golden Eagles trailed 34-32 at the half before outscoring the Wolverines, 34-21, over the final 20 minutes.
The post-Kevin Durant era got off to a slow start for sixteenth-ranked Texas, but a big second half helped the Longhorns pull away for a 58-37 win over Texas-San Antonio in their season opener.
Sophomore D.J. Augustin scored 19 points to lead the Longhorns, who had led only 22-19 at the half .
A run of 13 consecutive points for Texas midway through the second half decided the game.
Another hot-shooting freshman, John Flynn, was the star of the show as No. 25 Syracuse opened up with a 97-89 win over Siena.
