HAMBURG (FIBA U17 World Championship) – Being the only team unbeaten in group A play thus far, the U.S. wasted no time against China to show why they are strong favourites. Sporting a merciless full court press James McAdoo (26 points) and his running mates forced 19 turnovers – many of them leading to breakaway dunks. Uncharacteristicely enough for this high-flying event it was sharp-shooting wingman Bradley Beal (20 points) who struck first, openening the game up with a rare four point-play. The U.S. did not continue to give full effort on defense during the second quarter, leaving a chance for China to work its way back into the game (47:36, 20min).
China's hope of closing the gap in the third stanza quickly vanished when coach Don Showalter's team once again went wild on offense. Several dunks got the Americans so hyped up, that they aimed for the spectacular on nearly every single possession. Marquis Teague skyed in for a thunderous windmill dunk just before the game clock ran to zero.
Xuhang Zhu of China scored a team-high 17 points in a losing effort.
Quotes:
Don Showalter, United States head coach: „China was very well prepared. Our pressure defense gives us a lot of one-on-one layups. I liked the way we responded to China's effort after haltime.“
Bin Fan, China head coach: „The turnovers were one reason we lost the game. We did not find a way to consistantly deal with the press-defenese we faced.“
