Camby was invited to join the roster by Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo, but declined citing a “serious family situation”.

Camby’s agent Rick Kaplan told the Denver Post that the 6ft 11in, 235 pound power forward/center had made his decision after “serious deliberation”.

"Unfortunately he has to pass," Kaplan said. "It's an extremely difficult situation, a serious family situation that will prevent him from participating.

"He's very grateful to Mr Colangelo and USA Basketball for considering him."

Team USA is hoping to secure qualification to the 2008 Beijing Olympics by finishing in the top two at the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas.

The tournament gets underway in August.
