USA Basketball to stay in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS - USA Basketball have confirmed their national headquarters will remain in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after opting to relocate to a new downtown location in the city.

USA Basketball's future home will also be a headquarters for the United States Olympic Committee.

"USA Basketball is delighted to solidify a long-term commitment to stay in Colorado Springs, where USA Basketball has been headquartered since 1979," said USA Basketball Chairman, retired Gen. Martin E. Dempsey.

"We look forward to continuing to be a valuable contributor to the City of Colorado Springs and to the U.S. Olympic movement."

Construction on the new office will begin in the summer, and the move is due to be completed by the end of 2017.

"USA Basketball's decision to stay in Colorado Springs makes a lot of sense on multiple levels," added Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO.

"It will offer our organization a new first class, state of the art office to meet our growth and be located in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs.

"With Colorado Springs known as Olympic City USA and with it being home to the U.S. Olympic Committee, the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, plus 23 national governing bodies of sport and 58 national or international sports organizations, as well as the future home of the U.S. Olympic Museum, this is where USA Basketball needs to be.

"I also want to thank the John and Margot Lane Foundation for helping make this possible. The Lane Foundation shares a remarkable passion and vision for the city of Colorado Springs, and their very generous contribution puts USA Basketball in the position to remain a part of this community and plan for our future. Without their involvement, this would never have been possible."

Meanwhile Colorado Springs Mayor, John Suthers praised the announcement and said: "While we are proud to be the home of so many national governing bodies, the presence of a high-profile organization like USA Basketball is compelling evidence of our identity as Olympic City USA.

"We are thrilled that USA Basketball will continue to bring its elite athletes, coaches, staff members and events to our great city.

"The effect of the Olympic movement on both civic pride and the economy is truly beneficial and we thank USA Basketball for its continued commitment to Olympic City USA."

USA Basketball's new headquarters will feature approximately 10,000 square feet of office and meeting space, as well as an additional 16,000 square feet for storage.

Originally relocating its national headquarters from Jacksonville, Illinois, to Colorado Springs in January 1979, USA Basketball has been at its current location on Mark Dabling Boulevard since October 1993.
