SEATTLE (Olympics) - The United States women have won gold medals at the last four Olympic Games.
Nothing happened over the weekend in their friendly clash with China in Seattle to dispel the notion that the Americans are the team to beat at the London Games.
Getting a balanced scoring attack led by Tamika Catchings' 19 points, Geno Auriemma's team rolled to a 100-62 victory.
Catchings played just 14 minutes but was sensational, drilling nine of her 11 shots from the floor.
Ever the perfectionist, Auriemma wasn't satisfied with his team's defense despite the 38-point triumph.
"Defense is going to be the last thing that we get right, but as the weeks go on, we’re going to get it right," Auriemma promised.
In London, the American team will play in Group A against Angola, the Chinese and three of the sides that come out of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) for Women.
Diana Taurasi has already played in two Olympics, in Athens and Beijing, and she can't wait for this summer's big event.
"It really is special the minute you get there," she said.
"It’s the biggest stage, Opening Ceremonies, everything is just on a grand scale.
"To be able to play basketball and represent our country, it really means a lot to all of us every time we get an opportunity to do that."
