MONTEVIDEO - Victor Hugo Berardi, one of the most recognised and important coaches of Uruguay, passed away on Tuesday in Buenos Aires after attending the friendly game between Uruguay and Argentina.

Berardi served as head coach of Uruguay's senior men's national team from 1993 to 1997, during which time he led them at South American Championships, Pan American Games and FIBA Americas Championships.

He was the last coach to lead a Uruguayan team to a title at a South American Championship, doing so in Venezuela in 1997.

It came after they had been crowned South American champions two years earlier on home soil.

Berardi was also South American champion with Uruguay's youth team in 1982 and at club level with Penarol in 1982 and Bigua 10 years later.

He won nine editions of the Federal Tournament, including three each with Bigua (1988, 1989 and 1990) and Welcome (1998, 1999, 2000), two with Bohemiaos (1983 and 1984) and one with Penarol (1982).
