MONTEVIDEO (Liga Metropolitana) - The Uruguayan Liga Metropolitana has been suspended until next weekend after fans rioted following Bohemios' 109-97 win over Cordon.
The result meant Bohemios took the lead going into the Liga Metropolitana's second stage, however their joy was tempered after a riot by Cordon fans resulted in an injury to center Mauro Mainennti.
Outside the stadium, Cordon fans were so angry after the defeat that they began to throw stones and smash up the surrounding area.
As former Union Atletica player Mainennti tried to escape the rain of stones from the fans, he was knocked over by the bus that was set to transport him and his team-mates back to Bohemios stadium.
The 21-year-old suffered seven broken ribs, as well as leg and arm injuries.
He was rushed to a local hospital in Montevideo and placed in intensive care.
The latest medical report released by the hospital revealed that Mainennti was "conscious and in a stable condition" and will not require any additional surgery.
"They were terrible moments. There were people standing on a bridge throwing stones at us," Bohemios president Fernando Parrella said.
The Liga Metropolitana Court are set to receive a police report on the incidents and the competition has been stopped until next weekend, when the second stage will resume.
"Having realised the seriousness of the incident, we need more time to make a decision on this case," explained Court president Washington Filippini.
According to the Liga Metropolitana regulations, Cordon could be deducted up to five points, which would hamper their chances of promotion to the LUB League.
