MONTEVIDEO (Liga Metropolitana) - Cordon have been dealt a blow in their bid to make the Liga Metropolitana play-offs after a disciplinary panel docked the club five points following crowd trouble in the recent game against Bohemios.
On Saturday, Bohemios defeated Juan Carlos Werstein's team 109-97 in the second stage of the Liga Metropolitana, a result that moved the visitors ahead of Cordon in the standings.
But Bohemios' celebrations were overshadowed by the actions of rioting Cordon fans, who threw stones and smashed up the area surrounding the stadium, in the process causing serious injury to Bohemios center Mauro Mainennti.
As the 21-year-old was trying to fend off the barrage after leaving the stadium, he was accidentally run over by the Bohemios team bus. He suffered seven broken ribs and injuries to an arm and a leg.
Mainennti was rushed to a local hospital in Montevideo and placed in intensive care.
The Liga Metropolitana's disciplinary court has now decided to penalise Cordon with a five-point deduction, a decision that drops them to sixth place and out of the play-off picture.
The court described Saturday incident as "an extremely serious episode that deserved the highest punishment".
Cordon have also been handed a 12-game stadium ban.
The league's disciplinary body is now set to decide on a resumption date for the Liga Metropolitana after all matches were suspended in the wake of the incident.
